topic 1: GETTING READY TO LEARN

  • Making the Transition From School to University

Making the move from school to university is not an easy task, it's definitely challenging. There is a need for students to adapt to the new life and make necessary life adjustments such as their socisl life and managing responsibilities to feel at ease.

For students to achieve their goals and targets successfully, there must be steps should be followed. Here are the Characteristics of Successful Students that we should take example of to be an excellent students.

  • Types of Learning Styles

Did you know there are three types of learning styles? It is Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic. It is helpful for us to acknowledge our own type of learning style so that we can learn more effectively.

Here is a test I did to recognize which type of learning style works for me:

As a result, I found out that I am more of a visual learner. So, starting from now on I can study and do revisions based on my type of learning style to enhance my performance in my study.

topic 2: GOAL SETTING

  • Setting Goals for The New Semester

WHAT IS A GOAL?

A goal is an idea of the future or desired result that a person or a group of people envision, plan and commit to achieve.

It is important because goals help motivate us to do our work, attend classes and study for exams

There are two types of goals, Long-term and short-term goals.

Long-term goals are the objective of the goals that you set at the end of the year for yourself for four or five years from now, or even for a lifetime.

While short-term goals, we can set for an hour from now, end of the day or semester.

  • Writing Effective Goal Statements

My goal for this semester using the Five-Step-approach

A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting, automation, and delivery of educational courses, training programs, or learning and development programs. The learning management system concept emerged directly from e-Learning.

An example of LMS used among students and lecturers in UiTM is UFUTURE.

HOW TO MANAGE TIME

Time management refers to managing time effectively so that the right time is allocated to the right activity.

Time management will help us set up our priorities, reduce our stress levels and most importantly increase our productivity.

  • Job Task Analysis

This Job Task Analysis is very useful for us to manage our daily schedule based on our current needs.

  • Prioritized Task List

TOPIC 5: MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

WHAT IS A MEMORY?

  • The ability to remember past experiences, and the power or process of recalling to mind previously learned facts, experiences, impressions, skills and habits.
  • “Having a good memory” involves both putting information into memory and getting it back out of both storage and retrieval

Human Brain Illustration

Sensory Memory (SM):

  • If one PAYS ATTENTION to the stimuli, it will go to the short-term memory (STM). If one does not pay attention, then the information will be lost.

Short-Term Memory (STM):

  • Has two components: immediate memory and working memory.
  • Immediate memory is the ability to remember a small amount of information over a few seconds
  • Working memory is a system for temporarily storing and managing the information required to carry out complex cognitive tasks such as learning, reasoning, and comprehension.

Long-Term Memory (LTM):

  • Unlimited & large storage
  • Informative knowledge can be stored for a long period
  • From STM, information is moved to LTM and stored here for later use (retrieval). If the information is not being used for some time, forgetting may occur.

After doing this test, I realized that I need to improve my memorizing and concentrating skills to perform better in my studies

During my first time memorizing those words, I'm able to remember only 7 out of 12 words. After using the tips above, I'm able to memorize all the words.

  • Concentration Chart
  • SQ3R: Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review

SQ3R is a comprehension strategy. It facilitates students to think about the text they are reading while reading. It helps students “get it” the first time they read a text by teaching students how to read and think like an effective reader.

SURVEY- Gather the information necessary to focus and formulate goals

QUESTION- Help your mind engage and concentrate

READ- Fill in the information around the mental structures you've been building

RECITE- Retrain your mind to concentrate and learn as it reads

REVIEW- Refine your mental organization and begin building memory

TOPIC 6: TAKING LECTURE NOTES

After taking this test, I'm quite impressed that I got a high score. Personally, I enjoy taking notes and I believe that taking notes is vital.

TOPIC 7: Academic Integrity & performance

  • Plagiarism

“An act of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author.”

Plagiarism can be prevented by simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed and providing the readers with the necessary information to find that source is usually enough to prevent plagiarism.
